How to Check Gorilla Permit Availability

How to Check Gorilla Permit Availability

A gorilla trekking permit is a document issued to all those who want to track gorillas in their natural habitat. This permit is compulsory, comes with a standard price, and shows details such as the trekker’s or booking agent’s name, the date of tracking, the trekking region, and an official seal.

Only visitors aged fifteen years and above, whether able-bodied, disabled, young, or old, and without transmissible illnesses, are allowed to visit. Permits are valid for a single use on the set trekking date. If you fail to show up on the tracking day, the permit becomes invalid, with no refunds or postponements.

There are three countries where gorilla trekking permits are offered, but the demand for Ugandan permits is higher than in other countries, even though trekking is also available in two other destinations.

Rwanda offers luxury gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park in the northern part of the country, with permits costing USD 1500 each.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is another destination with two gorilla species: mountain gorillas in Virunga National Park and lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Congo’s permits cost USD 400 each, making it the most affordable option.

Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure available only in Africa, with Uganda being a top destination, hosting over 50% of the world’s mountain gorilla population.

Mountain gorillas live in tropical forests and attract visitors all year round. Uganda and Rwanda draw many trekkers because of their large gorilla populations, reliable trekking options, cool weather, and security, which explains why these countries often have more visitors than available permits.

There are about 40 gorilla groups tracked across Uganda and Rwanda, with 8 permits issued per gorilla family each day.

The best months for gorilla trekking are June to October and December to March. Treks usually begin early, starting at 8:00 am with a pre-trek briefing.

A gorilla trekking trip creates lasting memories and stories. Although the permits are in high demand and limited, you can secure yours if you book well in advance.
