Rushaga vs. Nkuringo – Best Sector for Gorilla Trekking

Rushaga and Nkuringo are sectors in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in the southern part of the park. Both offer close encounters with mountain gorillas, but the treks are more challenging compared to Buhoma and Ruhija.
Rushaga is home to eight gorilla families, making it the sector with the highest number of gorillas. These families include Bweza, Rwigi, Nshongi, Mucunguzi, Busingye, Mishaya, and Kahungye.

Gorilla trekking in Rushaga is easier than in Nkuringo because the terrain is flatter. It is also the only sector in Bwindi that offers gorilla habituation, allowing tourists to spend up to four hours with the gorillas.
Nkuringo, on the other hand, is home to three gorilla families: Bushaho, Nkuringo, and Christmas. This sector is known for its steep and rugged terrain, making trekking more challenging.
Below is a comparison between the two sectors:
In terms of accessibility, both Rushaga and Nkuringo can be reached by road, but Rushaga is closer to highways and nearby towns. By air, both sectors can be accessed through Kisoro Airstrip, followed by a drive of about 1 to 2 hours to reach either sector.
In terms of accommodation, both sectors offer budget to luxury options. However, Nkuringo is known for having more luxury lodges with beautiful views of the forest and high-quality services.
These lodges include Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, Chameleon Hill Lodge, Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, and Lake Mutanda Lodge.
In terms of experience, both sectors offer high chances of seeing mountain gorillas, but Rushaga has the added benefit of gorilla habituation, allowing tourists to spend up to four hours with the gorillas.
In terms of trekking distance, it often depends on where the gorillas are located. Nkuringo usually requires longer treks because of its rugged terrain.
In terms of gorilla families, Rushaga has more families than Nkuringo, so there are more permits available daily in Rushaga.
Both sectors offer memorable gorilla trekking experiences that leave tourists wanting more.
