Tipping Guide for Your Gorilla Trekking Safari

Tipping Guide for Gorilla Trekking

Giving a tip to people who dedicate their time, skills, and knowledge to make your safari a success is a way to show gratitude during your gorilla trekking adventure.

Tipping is not mandatory, but it is appreciated and motivating. It is common to tip your driver guide, hotel staff, porters, and ranger guides.

There is no fixed amount for tipping, but it is helpful to know how to approach it to avoid any discomfort. Your trekking permit covers the ranger guide’s service, so tipping is an extra appreciation.

Porters have set prices for their services, usually between $10 and $15, but you can add a tip if you feel they provided excellent service.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is a rewarding but tiring activity, taking place on foot through dense forests with slopes, thorns, and bushes.

After the trek, it is good to appreciate the team that supported you during the experience.

When & How to Tip

When & How to Tip

It is best to tip after the entire trek or trip, allowing the team to stay focused until the end.

Do not feel limited by a set amount, and there is no need to ask the person how much you should give. Tip based on the service you received and how much you enjoyed the experience.

If a group of people assisted you, it is better to tip the team as a whole rather than individuals. You can give the tip to the team leader in front of the group and ask that it be shared.

You can tip in any currency, including US Dollars, Euros, or local currency. Tips can start from $5, depending on what you are comfortable with.

Do not feel pressured to tip, and let it be your decision. If there is a tipping box at the lodge, you can place your tip there so all staff members benefit.

Tipping during a gorilla trekking safari is a good gesture and highly recommended, but it is not a requirement. The suggestions above can guide you during your visit to Uganda or any gorilla trekking destination.

Where to Trek Gorillas

Where to Trek Gorillas

Gorillas are only found in Africa, and gorilla trekking takes place in the east and central regions of the continent. Gorillas are closely related to humans, sharing about 98% of our genes, and feed on leaves, fruits, stems, and bamboo.

You can find gorillas in Africa’s misty jungles, including Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Virunga and Kahuzi-Biega National Parks in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks in Uganda.

Gorilla trekking starts early in the morning with a briefing by park rangers at the headquarters, lasting about 30 minutes. The trek can take 2 to 6 hours, depending on your pace, plus an additional hour to observe and take photos of the gorillas.

A trekking permit is required and costs $800 in Uganda, $1,500 in Rwanda, and $400 in the Democratic Republic of Congo per person per day. The fee includes park entry, ranger services, and community contributions.

Best Time to Trek Gorillas

Best Time to Trek Gorillas

Gorillas can be seen in the Virunga ranges throughout the year, with a 99% chance of sighting them. However, the dry months from June to October offer a better trekking experience.

Dian Fossey, a researcher in Volcanoes National Park, played a key role in gorilla conservation, raising awareness and helping increase the gorilla population while reducing poaching and promoting forest protection. Today, there are about 1,060 mountain gorillas in the world, with half of them living in Uganda.

Gorillas are large primates with fur-covered bodies, living in high-altitude areas of Africa. Each group is led by an alpha male known as a silverback, who has a silver line of hair on his back. Gorillas eat a variety of plants, including roots, leaves, bamboo shoots, and fruits.

Strict rules are in place to protect the gorillas and their environment. These guidelines are explained by the ranger guide during the briefing before your trek, ensuring you understand how to respect the gorillas in their natural habitat.
