Detailed 4-Day Gorillas & Golden Monkey Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park and Visit Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village
Your safari begins at the agreed meeting point, with a drive to Volcanoes National Park, home to golden monkeys and tied closely to the work of Dian Fossey in the Virunga Mountains. On arrival, you visit Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village for traditional Rwandan music and dance, then check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Golden Monkey Trekking and Dian Fossey Hike
After breakfast, you attend a short briefing at the park offices on golden monkey trekking, covering their behavior and the rules to follow in the forest. You then walk into the jungle and spend one hour watching the monkeys move and jump through the trees.
After lunch at the lodge, you hike to Dian Fossey’s grave, learning about her work protecting mountain gorillas and setting up the Karisoke Research Center. Along the trail, you may spot birds, plants, and occasionally gorillas. You return to the lodge in the evening.
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking Experience
After breakfast, you head to park headquarters for a gorilla trekking briefing, covering rules such as keeping 8 meters from the gorillas and avoiding flash photography. Your guide leads the trek, pointing out forest animals and plants along the way. The trek takes 2 to 6 hours depending on the gorillas’ location.
Once you find them, you spend one hour watching and photographing the group, which may include mothers with babies or a silverback leading the family. You return to the lodge for rest and dinner.
Day 4: Drive Back to Kigali, City Tour, and Fly Home
After breakfast, you drive back to Kigali and visit sites including the Kigali Genocide Memorial, Kimironko Market, and Inema Art Center. After lunch in the city, you transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
