Detailed 5-Day Rwanda Wildlife & Gorilla Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Pickup and Drive to Akagera National Park
Your Gorilla Hurly Burly driver-guide picks you up and briefs you on the trip ahead. If time allows, you take a short Kigali city tour, visiting the Genocide Memorial and local markets, before lunch and the drive to Akagera National Park. You arrive at your lodge in the afternoon for dinner and rest.
Day 2: Full Day Game Drive
After breakfast, you go on both a morning and evening game drive through Akagera, looking for elephants, buffaloes, rhinos, lions, leopards, and giraffes among many other species. After the morning drive, you have lunch at the lodge, then relax near the Akagera River before dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Guided Nature Walk and Drive to Volcanoes National Park
After coffee, you take a 1 to 2-hour guided nature walk to stretch your legs and learn about local plant life. You then check out and drive to Volcanoes National Park, passing hills, farms, and small communities along the way. You arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon for dinner and rest.
Day 4: Gorilla Trekking and Cultural Visit
After an early breakfast, you drive to park headquarters for a gorilla trekking briefing, including a short video and document check. The trek takes 1 to 6 hours depending on the gorillas’ location, followed by one hour observing the family feed, play, and care for their young.
After the trek, you return for lunch, then visit Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village for a cultural show featuring traditional dance, stories, and clothing. Dinner and overnight stay follow.
Day 5: Dian Fossey Grave Hike and Departure
After coffee, you hike to Dian Fossey’s grave, learning about her work protecting mountain gorillas and founding the Karisoke Research Center. After lunch, you drive 3 to 4 hours to Kigali, where you’re dropped at your hotel or the airport for departure.
