Gorilla Trekking vs. Chimpanzee Trekking – Which to Choose

Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking are exciting experiences in the rainforests of Africa, giving tourists a chance to see animals closely related to humans. Both gorillas and chimpanzees share about 98.8% of human DNA, making these encounters very rewarding.

Choosing which experience is better depends on factors such as cost, personal preference, and physical fitness. Gorilla trekking involves climbing steep slopes in search of gorillas, as they live in the mountains. Tourists pass through thick vegetation, and sturdy hiking shoes are needed for stability, especially on muddy or slippery trails.

Gorilla trekking requires more physical fitness to manage the steep and slippery paths. Chimpanzee trekking, on the other hand, happens in lower and less steep areas, although sturdy hiking boots are still needed, but it requires less physical effort.

Cost is another factor to consider. Gorilla trekking is the most expensive wildlife activity in tropical Africa, with a permit in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park costing USD 800 per person per trek.

Chimpanzee trekking permits are cheaper, costing around USD 250 per person per trek.

Both treks allow only 8 people to visit each group per day, with a maximum of one hour spent with the primates. This limited time and small group size help protect the primates from diseases, as they share similar DNA with humans.

The trekking rules for both gorilla and chimpanzee trekking are the same. These include keeping a distance of 7 meters, not getting too close to the primates, and children under 15 years are not allowed to trek.

The best time for trekking both primates is during the dry season when trails are easier to navigate. The dry season is from June to September and December to February.

Gorilla trekking is best for experienced hikers and those looking for a luxury experience, while chimpanzee trekking is a good choice for budget travelers and those seeking a moderate trek.
