Detailed 6-Day Rwanda Gorillas & Masai Mara Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Pick up & drive to Volcanoes National Park in Ruhengeri

You will be welcomed in Rwanda by your safari guide and begin a scenic drive to Volcanoes National Park. The park is in northwestern Rwanda and the drive takes about 2 to 3 hours.

Travel in our comfortable 4×4 vehicle, enjoying views of the countryside and the hills. Arrive early at Volcanoes National Park near Ruhengeri, check in at your gorilla lodge, and spend the evening relaxing.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park & Iby’Iwacu cultural experience

Start the day at Kinigi for briefing and registration. You will be assigned one of the 12 habituated gorilla groups living in Volcanoes National Park near Musanze.

At 8:00 am, start the trek through the forest to find the mountain gorillas. The trek can last between 2 to 6 hours, depending on where the gorillas are. You will spend one hour observing and taking photos of the gorillas.

After the trek, return to the lodge and share your experience. In the afternoon, visit Iby’Iwacu village to meet the local community and learn about their culture. Return to your lodge for the night.

Day 3: Drive from Ruhengeri to Kigali & fly to Nairobi, Kenya

After breakfast, your private driver will pick you up for the 2-3 hour drive back to Kigali. From Kigali, you will go to the airport to catch your flight to Nairobi where your next safari begins.

Day 4: Pick up from Nairobi hotel & drive to Maasai Mara (Narok County)

You will be picked up from your Nairobi hotel by your Kenyan driver-guide. Then drive to Maasai Mara Reserve in Narok County, part of the Rift Valley.

Maasai Mara is rich in wildlife, home to buffaloes, elephants, wildebeests, giraffes, zebras, elands, topis, gazelles, impalas, and over 500 bird species.

Day 5: Full-day guided wildlife viewing – predators, wildebeests, and big game

Spend the full day searching for animals in Maasai Mara with your experienced guide in a 4×4 vehicle. Carry enough bottled water and a packed lunch.

The main focus will be the Mara River area to experience the wildebeest migration. You will also have a good chance to see big game and predators.

Enjoy a picnic lunch during the tour. Later, visit a Maasai village for a cultural walk and learning experience. Return to your camp or lodge for the night.

Day 6: Departure back to Nairobi

After breakfast, check out from your camp or lodge and drive through Maasai Mara, keeping an eye out for wildlife active in the morning.

Then continue to Nairobi city where you will be dropped at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your departure.
