Detailed 8-Day Rwanda Zanzibar Holiday Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali City

Take a tour around Kigali, known as Africa’s cleanest city. Depending on your arrival time, have lunch and explore the city.

Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park

Wake up early for breakfast, then travel to Nyungwe National Park. Arrive in time for lunch. Afterward, visit Kitabi Cultural Village for a chance to learn about Rwandan culture through performances by local artists. Return to your lodge to rest.

Day 3: Chimpanzee trekking & canopy walk

Start early for a primate experience. After breakfast, go to the park headquarters for a briefing on chimpanzee tracking. Your guide will lead you to the habituated chimpanzee groups.

Watch the chimpanzees as they feed, play, rest, and groom each other. After lunch, enjoy the canopy walk to see more of the park’s plants and animals. Later, return to the lodge to relax.

Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park and visit the Iby’Iwachu community

After breakfast, drive to Volcanoes National Park for your next adventure. Arrive in time for lunch, then visit the Ibyiwachu community.

Learn about Kinyarwanda culture through dances, music, and traditional activities such as millet grinding, cattle rearing, food preparation, and local brewing, all demonstrated by the locals.

Day 5: Gorilla trekking

Wake up early for breakfast, then head to the park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla trekking rules.

The trek can last from 2 to 6 hours depending on where the gorillas are, and you will spend one hour with them in their natural home.

Take photos and videos of the gorilla family you meet. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6: Transfer to Zanzibar by air

After breakfast, drive from Volcanoes National Park back to Kigali. Take a regional flight to Zanzibar, arriving in Stone Town, the oldest part and capital of Zanzibar.

Check into your accommodation and relax until dinner.

Day 7: Stone Town tour

Enjoy a refreshing tour of the famous Stone Town. Visit the Arab Fort and learn about its history and architecture. Also visit the Old Dispensary to discover more about the town’s past.

After lunch, take a short boat ride to Changuu Island, also known as Prison Island. Enjoy the clear water and white sandy beaches and see many large tortoises. You can also snorkel and explore the Indian Ocean.

In the evening, visit Forodhani Gardens to try different Zanzibar dishes.

Day 8: Departure

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Zanzibar International Airport for your flight home, marking the end of your 8-day adventure.
