Day 1: Arrival in Kigali City
Your Gorilla Hurly Burly guide meets you on arrival and takes you on a tour of Kigali, known as one of Africa’s cleanest cities. Depending on your arrival time, you have lunch first, then explore the city’s streets, markets, and memorial sites. Dinner and overnight stay in Kigali.
Day 2: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park
After breakfast, you travel to Nyungwe National Park, home to over a dozen primate species. You arrive in time for lunch. In the afternoon, you visit Kitabi Cultural Village to watch local performances and learn about Rwandan traditions. Dinner and overnight stay near the park.
Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk
After an early breakfast, you head to park headquarters for a briefing on chimpanzee tracking. Your guide leads you into the forest to find a habituated chimpanzee group. You watch them feed, play, and groom each other in their natural setting. After lunch, you take the forest canopy walk for wide views over Nyungwe’s plant and animal life. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park and Iby’Iwacu Community Visit
After breakfast, you drive to Volcanoes National Park, home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. You arrive in time for lunch, then visit the Iby’Iwacu Community. Local residents demonstrate Kinyarwanda traditions, including music, dance, millet grinding, cattle rearing, food preparation, and local brewing. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 5: Gorilla Trekking
After an early breakfast, you head to park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla trekking rules. The trek can take 2 to 6 hours depending on the gorilla family’s location that day. Once you find them, you spend one hour observing and photographing the group in their natural habitat. Dinner and overnight stay at your lodge.
Day 6: Transfer to Zanzibar by Air
After breakfast, you drive from Volcanoes National Park back to Kigali. From there, you take a regional flight to Zanzibar, landing in Stone Town, the island’s historic capital. You check into your accommodation and rest before dinner.
Day 7: Stone Town Tour
After breakfast, you tour Stone Town, visiting the Arab Fort and learning about its history and architecture. You also stop at the Old Dispensary to see its carved balconies and past use as a medical center. After lunch, you take a short boat ride to Prison Island, also called Changuu Island, where you see giant tortoises and can snorkel in clear water. In the evening, you visit Forodhani Gardens to try Zanzibar street food, including grilled seafood and local snacks.
Day 8: Departure
