Detailed 6-Day Rwanda Gorillas & Masai Mara Safari Itinerary

Day 1: Pickup and Drive to Volcanoes National Park in Ruhengeri
Your Gorilla Hurly Burly guide welcomes you in Rwanda and drives you to Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda, a trip of about 2 to 3 hours through scenic countryside. You arrive early, check in at your gorilla lodge near Ruhengeri, and spend the evening relaxing.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park and Iby’Iwacu Cultural Experience
Your day starts at Kinigi for briefing and registration, where you get assigned to one of the 12 habituated gorilla groups near Musanze. At 8:00 AM, the trek begins, taking 2 to 6 hours depending on the gorillas’ location, followed by one hour observing and photographing the group.
After the trek, you return to your lodge, then visit Iby’Iwacu village in the afternoon to meet the local community and learn about their culture. Overnight stay at your lodge.
Day 3: Drive from Ruhengeri to Kigali and Fly to Nairobi, Kenya
After breakfast, your driver picks you up for the 2 to 3-hour drive back to Kigali. From there, you head to the airport for your flight to Nairobi, where the Kenya portion of your safari begins.
Day 4: Drive from Nairobi to Maasai Mara
Your Kenyan driver-guide picks you up from your Nairobi hotel and drives you to Maasai Mara Reserve in Narok County, part of the Great Rift Valley. The reserve holds buffaloes, elephants, wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, and over 500 bird species.
Day 5: Full-Day Guided Wildlife Viewing
You spend the full day searching for wildlife across Maasai Mara in a 4×4 vehicle, with a packed lunch and bottled water for the day. The main focus falls on the Mara River area, where the wildebeest migration passes through during peak season, alongside strong chances to see predators and other big game.
Later, you visit a Maasai village for a cultural walk and learning session before returning to your camp or lodge for the night.
Day 6: Departure Back to Nairobi
After breakfast, you check out and drive through Maasai Mara, watching for morning wildlife activity along the way. You continue to Nairobi, where Gorilla Hurly Burly drops you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your departure flight.
