Mubare holds the distinction of being the first gorilla family ever habituated, back in 1991, and the first group opened to tourists by 1993. Located in the Buhoma sector, Mubare now has 8 members, having shrunk somewhat as individuals moved to other groups over the years. Shorter hikes make Mubare one of the easier families to trek.
Habinyanja Gorilla Family
Formed in 1997 and also based in Buhoma, Habinyanja has 12 members, with some having split off to join Rushegura over time. This group is known for playful juveniles, making it a strong choice for photography. Trekking typically takes 2 to 4 hours.
Rushengura Gorilla Family
Rushengura, discovered in 2000, holds about 19 members, one of the largest groups in Buhoma. The family has stayed stable over time, and many tourists prefer it for the easier access combined with a good chance of seeing a larger number of gorillas in one visit.
Oruzogo Gorilla Family
Found in the Ruhija sector, Oruzogo was formed in 2007 and has 17 members. Younger gorillas here are often seen playing, adding energy to the encounter. Ruhija also sees fewer visitors than Buhoma, giving trekkers a quieter overall experience.
Kahungye Gorilla Family
Based in the Rushaga sector, Kahungye has 17 members and was formed in 2011. This group includes a rare pair of twins, an uncommon occurrence among gorillas, along with plenty of visible social interaction worth observing during your visit.
Nkuringo Gorilla Family
Discovered in 1997, the Nkuringo family has 12 members and lives in the Nkuringo sector. This group ranks among the hardest to trek due to the high-altitude terrain, but many trekkers find the effort worthwhile once they reach the gorillas.
