Detailed 5-Day Rwanda Gorilla & Chimpanzee Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at the Airport and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your Gorilla Hurly Burly representative and driver-guide welcome you at the airport with a short briefing on the safari and its rules. You then drive about 2 to 3 hours to Volcanoes National Park, home to more than 10 habituated gorilla families. On arrival, you check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
After breakfast, you drive to park headquarters, where your permits and passports are checked before heading to the trailhead. A ranger guide briefs you before the trek begins. Gorilla trekking can take 1 to 8 hours depending on the group’s location, and a porter is available to help carry gear if the gorillas have moved high into the mountains.
Once you find them, you spend one hour watching and photographing the group. After the trek, you collect your gorilla trekking certificate and return to the lodge for meals and rest.
Day 3: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park
After breakfast, you drive 4 to 5 hours to Nyungwe National Park in southwestern Rwanda, near the Burundi border and south of Lake Kivu. On arrival, you check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest
After an early breakfast, you drive to the park office to collect your permit, then continue to the trailhead for a ranger briefing. The trek takes about 2 to 4 hours, and once you find the chimpanzees, you spend one hour watching them play, feed, and interact. You then receive your chimpanzee trekking certificate and return to the lodge for meals and rest.
Day 5: Drive Back to Kigali and Departure
After breakfast, you drive back to Kigali, where you can be dropped at a restaurant in the city or taken directly to the airport for your flight home.
