Best Time for Gorilla Sightings – Month-by-Month Guide

Gorilla sightings are possible all year, but some months offer better experiences, especially during the dry months.

Dry months bring less rainfall and easier hiking conditions compared to the wet months.

January is one of the best months for gorilla sightings. It marks the start of the dry season, with little rain and mist in the afternoons. Trails are dry due to 6 to 8 hours of sunshine daily.

Daytime temperatures range from 12 to 25°C and are cooler at night. Newborn gorillas are often seen during this month, and gorillas stay at lower elevations.

February is also a good month for gorilla sightings with weather similar to January. Rainfall drops to about 40mm, and there is 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day, keeping trails dry for easier hiking.

Vegetation is less dense, improving visibility. Clear skies allow photographers to capture good photos, and there is less competition for permits.

June is another good month, with rare and short rains. Although vegetation is dense, gorilla sightings are still possible. Gorillas move to mid-altitudes, so tourists do not need to trek long distances.

June marks the start of the peak season, so it is advisable to book permits early.

July is another ideal month when the dry season is at its peak. Trails are dry and dusty, making trekking easier. Vegetation is thin and dry, which improves visibility.

Gorilla permits are in high demand during this month, so it is best to book at least 6 months in advance.

December is also a good month for gorilla trekking, with moderate rainfall that keeps trails passable. Vegetation may be thick due to some rain, but tourists can still navigate the trails and spot gorillas in their habitat.
