How to Book Last-Minute Gorilla Permits in Uganda

Booking last-minute gorilla permits in Uganda is possible for those who decide to take on the adventure of gorilla trekking in the rainforests of Bwindi or Mgahinga.

Sometimes, permits become available when tourists who booked earlier cancel their plans, giving others a chance to buy these permits at the last minute.

Last-minute permits are best booked through trusted tour operators or directly from the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). However, booking directly with UWA is often easier for Ugandans and foreign residents, while international tourists are advised to use trusted tour operators.

If you are interested in a last-minute permit, contact a trusted tour operator to check for availability. If permits are available, the operator will request your travel details, including the date, month, year of travel, and your preferred trekking location.

You will also need to provide the required documents. Once you have made the payment and submitted the documents, the operator will book the permit on your behalf.

After booking your permit, the tour operator will organize the rest of your trip, including securing your accommodation and arranging transportation to your trekking destination.

Uganda offers 160 gorilla permits daily, with 20 gorilla families available for trekking. Each family can be visited by only eight tourists per day.

Although this may seem like a large number, permits can still sell out quickly, so it is recommended to book 3 to 6 months in advance, even though last-minute bookings are possible.

Booking early will secure your spot and allow you to prepare for your trek without stress.

A gorilla permit for Bwindi and Mgahinga costs USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents, USD 700 per person for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens.

Note that only visitors aged 15 years and above are allowed to hold a gorilla permit.

As you prepare for your trek, remember to pack essential items such as sturdy hiking shoes, a rain jacket, sweaters, insect repellent, long-sleeve shirts, and long trousers, among other necessary items.
