How to Pay for Your Gorilla Trekking Permit in Uganda

How to pay for your permit – A gorilla permit is an official document issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority that allows you to trek gorillas in their natural habitat.
If you are planning a trip to Bwindi, the first step is to secure your permit. It is best to buy your permit 3 to 6 months in advance because they sell out quickly.
Before buying a permit, it is important to understand the prices in Uganda. A gorilla permit costs USD 800 for foreign non-residents, USD 700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens.
Payments for gorilla permits can be made through licensed tour operators who purchase the permits from the Uganda Wildlife Authority and keep them until your arrival. Alternatively, tourists can pay directly to the Uganda Wildlife Authority and show proof of payment.
There are different payment options you can use to pay for your permit:
Bank Transfers

This involves sending money directly to the company’s bank account. Always ensure the account is in the company’s name, not an individual’s, to avoid fraud. After payment, send a copy of the scanned receipt, as it takes about 4 to 7 days for the money to reflect in the company’s account. This method is secure, but it often comes with high transfer charges.
Credit Cards

Most licensed tour operators accept credit card payments using Visa, MasterCard, and American Express, and payments can be made from anywhere. Credit card payments are quick, and the operator receives the money instantly, which makes this method popular.
Cash Payments

Cash payments are accepted in Uganda. You can pay for your permit at the Uganda Wildlife Authority offices in Kampala or at the office of the licensed tour operator.
Mobile Money Payments

Tourists within Uganda can pay via MTN or Airtel mobile money. This method is quick and secure as long as you have the correct payment details.
Pesapal

Pesapal is a new method for sending money to Africa. It is quick and affordable, charging about 3.5% of the total amount you send. Tourists can use credit cards like Visa for payment, and the tour operator will receive an email notification when the money is deposited into their account.
Once you pay for your permit, your place for trekking is secured, and using the methods above ensures your money is safe.
