Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in Kanungu District, about 490 km from Kampala, Uganda’s capital. The park covers 331 square kilometers and is known for its rare and endangered mountain gorillas.

The park has the highest number of mountain gorillas in the world, with many gorilla families available for visitors to see.

Bwindi is covered by thick forest and is home to over 350 bird species, with 14 species found only in this park. It also has over 230 butterfly species and a few large mammals like elephants, duikers, buffaloes, golden cats, bush pigs, giant forest hogs, black-fronted duikers, yellow-backed duikers, and clawless otters.

The park has four sectors for visitors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Rushaga. These sectors, covered by rainforests formed over 25,000 years ago, have habituated gorilla families open for trekking.

Top Things to Do in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

  • Gorilla Trekking: The trek begins at 8:00 am with a briefing, and armed guides will take you into the forest to find the gorillas. Only eight visitors are allowed to visit each gorilla family, with one hour spent in their presence. During the trek, you may see other primates, birds, and large mammals. The activity can take over four hours.
  • Gorilla Habituation Experience: This activity helps gorillas get used to human presence. It is done once a day in the Rushaga sector, starting at 7:30 am and lasting over eight hours, including four hours spent with the gorillas. Visitors learn about the gorillas’ feeding habits, family structure, and lifestyle.
  • Bird Watching: The park has over 350 bird species, including 23 rift valley endemics, with 14 found only in Bwindi. Birds you may see include the Kivu ground thrush, white-tailed blue flycatcher, African emerald cuckoo, African blue flycatcher, red-headed bluebill, and common bulbul.
  • Cultural Encounters: Visitors can take guided community walks to learn about the Batwa or Bakiga cultures, experiencing their music, dance, stories, food, and traditional healing practices.
  • Nature Walks/Forest Hikes: Guided nature walks with park rangers are available for those who wish to explore on foot. Trails lead to waterfalls, untouched forests, and views of wildlife and birds, with scenic views of Lake George, Lake Edward, and the Rwenzori Mountains.
  • Cycling/Mountain Biking: Cycling in Bwindi is managed by the Buhoma community and helps support local women. Trails offer beautiful views and chances to see wildlife like colobus monkeys, bushbucks, and red-tailed monkeys. Trail options last 7 to 13 hours and provide a rewarding experience.
  • Lake Visits: Visitors can explore Lake Mutanda in Kisoro or Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale, where they can enjoy canoeing, fishing, hiking, and community tours. These lakes offer beautiful views of the Virunga Mountains.
