What to Wear for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Since trekking involves hiking through thick vegetation and to higher elevations, choosing the right gear is important for your comfort and safety.
The right clothing can make the difference between a rewarding experience and a difficult one.
Here is what to wear on the day of your trek:
- Long-Sleeved Shirt: A long-sleeved shirt will protect your arms from thick grasses and tree branches that may scratch you. It also helps protect you from insect bites. If you get a scratch or insect bite, it can affect your entire trekking experience.
- Long Trousers: Long trousers protect your legs from thorns and grasses that could scratch you. Avoid jeans as they can get wet from dew on the grass, making you uncomfortable.
- Sturdy Hiking Shoes: Sturdy hiking boots help you move easily during the trek. Since the trails can be muddy and slippery, these boots will give you stability and protect your feet. Avoid sandals as they can easily slip or get damaged on the trail.
- Strong Gardening Gloves: Gloves are recommended as you may need to hold onto tree branches for support during the trek. Without gloves, your hands can get scratched, which can affect your experience.
- Rain Jacket: A rain jacket is important in both the dry and wet seasons. Many tourists forget to bring one during the dry season, but since Bwindi is a tropical rainforest, rain can fall at any time. A rain jacket will keep you dry if it rains heavily.
- Hat: A hat will protect your head from the sun or rain during the trek.
- Sunglasses: Sunglasses are useful during the dry season to protect your eyes from the sun.
Once you are dressed in the right gear, remember to carry a camera to capture moments, drinking water to stay hydrated, a packed lunch, and your permit before you start your trek.
The gorilla trekking experience will be enjoyable and comfortable when you are prepared with the right gear.
