Gorilla Trekking Packing List – Essential Gear & Clothing Tips

Gorilla Trekking Packing List - Essential Gear & Clothing Tips

Gorilla trekking is one of the best activities in the world. By definition, gorilla trekking is when a ranger guide leads you into the forest to search for gorillas. When you find them, you get one hour to watch the gorillas as they go about their daily activities.

Gorilla trekking takes place in three East African countries: Uganda in Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks, Rwanda in Volcanoes National Park, and the Democratic Republic of Congo in Virunga National Park.

Many people dream of going gorilla trekking, but there are important requirements to consider, including clothing that many travelers forget to pack. This article will guide you on what to bring when traveling for gorilla trekking in Africa.

A gorilla trekking permit is a key requirement for every tourist who wants to take part in this activity. This permit is a document given by the park headquarters in each gorilla destination, allowing you to join the trek. It is best to book your permit two or three months before your trekking date.

Rain gear, such as a rain jacket and a sweater, is important, especially during the rainy season. Gorillas live in tropical rainforests where it can rain at any time, so these items will help keep you dry and warm.

Hiking shoes are essential because gorilla trekking involves walking up and down slippery paths. Sandals are not suitable for this activity. You need strong, waterproof shoes to help you walk through muddy and slippery trails, especially during the rainy season.

A camera is important for capturing your experience with the gorillas. Make sure your camera is fully charged and does not use flash, as flash photography is not allowed and may disturb the gorillas during your one-hour visit.

Sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat, and binoculars are also necessary, especially during the dry season. These items will protect you from the sun and help you see birds and other wildlife that are further away.

For clothing, pack long-sleeved shirts and long pants to protect your skin from nettles and thorns in the forest. Avoid wearing shorts, as they leave your legs exposed to scratches and insect bites.

Energy snacks are highly recommended because gorilla trekking can take many hours of walking. These snacks will help keep your energy levels up during the trek.

Walking sticks are provided at the park headquarters to help with hiking. Porters are also available to carry your bags for a small fee.

With these essentials, your gorilla trekking experience in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo will be successful and enjoyable.
