Detailed 4-Day Gorillas & Golden Monkey Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park & Visit Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village
Start the safari at the agreed meeting point and drive to Volcanoes National Park. This park is home to rare animals like golden monkeys and is also known for the work of Dian Fossey, a woman who studied and protected gorillas in the Virunga Mountains.
After arriving, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village where you will enjoy traditional Rwandan music and dances. Later, check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight. This marks the end of your first day.
Day 2: Golden Monkey Trekking and Dian Fossey Hike
After breakfast, go to the park offices for a short briefing about golden monkey trekking. A ranger guide will explain the behavior of these animals and the rules to follow in the forest.
You will then walk into the jungle and spend one hour observing the golden monkeys as they move and jump in the trees.
Return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, go on a hike to visit the grave of Dian Fossey. She worked hard to protect mountain gorillas and started gorilla habituation in Rwanda. She also set up the Karisoke Research Center.
During the hike, you may see birds, plants, and, if lucky, some gorillas along the trail. Return to the lodge in the evening.
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking Experience
Start the day with breakfast, then go to the park headquarters for a Rwanda gorilla trekking briefing. The rangers will explain important rules such as keeping 8 meters away from the gorillas, not using flash cameras, and not throwing anything at them.
You will trek with a guide who will show you other forest animals and plants along the way. The trek can take 2 to 6 hours, depending on where the gorillas are.
Once you find them, you will have one hour to watch and take photos. You may see mothers with babies or a silverback leading the group.
After the trek, return to the lodge for rest and dinner.
Day 4: Drive Back to Kigali, City Tour & Fly Home
On the final day, have breakfast and then drive back to Kigali. Once in the city, visit a few sites such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial, Kimironko Market, and Inema Art Center.
Enjoy lunch in the city, then transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
