Gorilla Trekking with Kids – Rules, Age Limits & Family Tips

Gorilla trekking with Kids – Gorilla trekking is a special experience that allows people to see mountain gorillas up close. This activity creates a strong connection to nature.
Because of this, many people, including kids, may want to take part.
However, there are rules and regulations that must be followed. One of the key rules is the age limit. Only children aged 15 years and above are allowed to go gorilla trekking.
If your child is under 15, they are not allowed to join the trek.
Children below 15 are often not allowed because they may be too young to handle the experience. The large size of the gorillas can scare them, which may cause them to cry or run away.
Another reason is health. Children have weaker immune systems and may carry illnesses like flu, which can easily spread to gorillas.
Since gorillas share 98% of their DNA with humans, they are at high risk of catching human diseases. In some cases, this can lead to death among gorillas.
Children may also struggle with the long hikes. The forest has steep and thick trails that require physical strength and endurance, which many children may not have.
In addition, children may not follow the rules well. They might make noise, get distracted, or forget to keep the required 7-meter distance from the gorillas.
Even though the age limit is strict, parents who want to trek with their children can send a written request to the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
Sometimes, children aged 13 or 14 may be allowed to join, depending on the situation.
If permission is granted, parents must take full responsibility for their children. Uganda Wildlife Authority and park rangers will not be held responsible for anything that may happen.
This request should be made at least three months before the trekking date.
If your child is not allowed to trek, they can still enjoy other activities that are open to all ages. These include cultural walks, nature walks, bird watching, and more.
Parents can also leave their children in the care of lodge or hotel staff while they go for gorilla trekking.
Gorilla trekking is not only for adults. With the right preparation and permission, older children can also enjoy this unique and safe experience.
