Gorilla Trekking for Photographers – Capture the Wild in Uganda & Rwanda

Gorilla Trekking for Photographers – Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that involves searching for mountain gorillas in the thick rain-forest and taking photos of them in their natural green environment.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the best places for gorilla photography because of its misty mountain landscape. Volcanoes National Park is also a good option for photographers. It offers easier treks and a clear view of the Virunga Mountains, which adds to the photo opportunities.
The trek starts early in the morning before sunrise. Tourists are given a briefing about the rules to follow. Cameras are checked and prepared, and then the park rangers lead the group into the forest.
After about 30 minutes to several hours of hiking through steep trails, tourists may find a gorilla family hidden in the thick bushes. When this happens, visitors must follow the rules and are then allowed to take photos of the gorillas as they move, feed, or rest.
To take good photos, it is better to shoot when the sunlight comes through the trees, avoid the strong midday sun, and focus on gorilla behavior and interactions instead of only close-up shots.
Gorilla trekking requires preparation, and photographers should carry the right equipment and protective gear.
Useful items include a camera with both a 24–70mm lens for wide shots and a 70–200mm lens for closer shots, a tripod, sunscreen, a rain jacket, a sweater, insect repellent, binoculars, a long-sleeved shirt, long trousers, and waterproof hiking shoes.
The best time for photographers to go gorilla trekking is during the dry season, from June to August and December to February. During this time, the trails are easier, the lighting is better, and there is less vegetation, making it easier to take clear photos.
A gorilla permit in Uganda costs USD 800 for foreign non-residents, USD 700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens.
Overall, gorilla trekking for photographers is not just about taking pictures. It is a chance to connect with these great animals in the wild.
