How to Get to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park from Entebbe

How to get to Bwindi from Entebbe

How to Get to Bwindi from Entebbe – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home of the mountain gorillas, is located in southwestern Uganda. The park can be accessed by road or by air.

Road transport is the most common and affordable way to reach Bwindi, allowing travelers to enjoy views of the countryside. However, road travel takes between 8 to 10 hours, depending on road conditions, traffic, and the distance of about 500 km.

The journey by road starts from Entebbe using a 4×4 safari vehicle, which can be hired or rented.

The common route followed is Entebbe – Kampala – Masaka – Mbarara – Kabale.

Many roads in Uganda, especially in rural areas, are not well maintained, so it is important to follow traffic rules and drive carefully for safety.

Budget travelers can use public transport in the form of buses available in Kampala. These buses travel from Kampala to Kabale, where you can then take a taxi to the park gate.

For those using flights, there are two airstrips serving Bwindi: Kisoro and Kihihi. A flight from Entebbe International Airport to Kisoro or Kihihi takes about one hour. Flights are a better option for those who wish to enjoy aerial views of Uganda’s hills and landscapes while reducing travel time.

Flights to Bwindi are conducted during daylight hours to avoid weather challenges common in the remote areas around the park.

Both scheduled and charter flights are available, offered by companies such as Aerolink and Bar Aviation Uganda.

Scheduled flights operate daily from morning to evening. Once you arrive at Kisoro or Kihihi airstrip, an experienced safari driver will be waiting to transfer you to your booked lodge in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

The best time to visit Bwindi is during the dry season from June to August and December to February.

A gorilla permit in Bwindi costs USD 800 for foreign non-residents, USD 600 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens.

If you are seeking a luxury experience, flying to Bwindi will save time for you to engage in other park activities. However, if you are a budget traveler, consider driving to Bwindi for your gorilla trekking experience.
