How to Cross the Border Between Uganda & Rwanda

Crossing the borders between Uganda and Rwanda is common for tourists and business travelers moving between the two countries.
There are two main border points used by travelers: Cyanika and Katuna.
Before crossing, every traveler needs to have the required documents. These include a valid passport with at least six months of validity, a visa that covers Uganda and Rwanda, a yellow fever vaccination certificate, and vehicle documents such as a logbook if you are driving.

When you arrive at the border, you will present your documents to the immigration officer, including your passport, visa, and yellow fever certificate. Your luggage will be checked and scanned to ensure there are no illegal items, and vehicles, including private cars and buses, will also be inspected before you are allowed to continue to your destination.
Cyanika border is busier than Katuna. It is located in Kisoro District on the Ugandan side and in Burera District on the Rwandan side. Many tourists use the Cyanika border when traveling from Kigali for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, as it is closer to the Rushaga sector. It is also used by those going to Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda from Uganda.
The Rwanda side of the border has stricter policies, so it is important to have all your documents ready and valid to avoid any issues.
Cyanika border opens at 6 am (Uganda time) and closes at 5 pm (Rwanda time). It does not operate 24 hours like Katuna border.
Katuna border is located in Kabale District on the Ugandan side and Gicumbi District on the Rwandan side. Most goods moving from Uganda to Rwanda pass through Katuna, making it the busiest border for commercial trucks and vehicles. Katuna border operates 24 hours a day.
East African citizens do not need a visa to cross at Katuna but must have a national ID. International tourists can obtain a visa at the border post.
Crossing from Uganda to Rwanda and back is straightforward if you have the right documents and follow the proper procedures.
