6-Day Uganda Tour – Trek Four Gorilla Families

This is a trip that only a few adventurous travelers have done. It allows you to trek four different gorilla families in Uganda. The trip mainly takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.

You will trek gorillas four times, meet the Batwa people, and also visit Lake Bunyonyi, which is Africa’s second-deepest lake.

Detailed 6-Day Uganda Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Fly to Bwindi (Nkuringo Sector) & Afternoon Nature Walk

After breakfast, your driver guide will pick you up from your hotel and take you to Entebbe International Airport for a scheduled flight to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the main home of mountain gorillas in Africa. This flight saves you from a 9-hour road trip and gives you wide views of Uganda’s beautiful nature.

When you arrive, check in at your lodge and have some refreshments and lunch. Later, go for a nature walk in the forest to see the plants, insects, butterflies, birds, and trees up close. If lucky, you may see forest elephants, buffaloes, or primates.

Day 2: Nkuringo Gorilla Trekking & Transfer to Rushaga Sector

After an early breakfast, go to the park headquarters for a briefing about gorilla trekking. You will learn the rules and be placed in a group of eight people. Each group visits one gorilla family per day. Then enter the forest with a ranger to look for your assigned gorilla group.

Trekking involves walking on rough and slippery paths as you follow the gorillas. It can take 1 to 8 hours, depending on where the gorillas are that day.

After lunch, visit the Batwa people. These are the original forest dwellers. Learn how they used to hunt, make fire, cook local food, and perform traditional dances. After the visit, return to your lodge for dinner and rest.

Day 3: Rushaga Gorilla Trekking & Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

Have an early breakfast and go to the park headquarters again. After a short briefing, you will be placed in another group to trek a different gorilla family. When you find them, you will spend one hour watching them and taking pictures.

In the late afternoon, drive to Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale. When you arrive, take an evening boat ride to explore some of the lake’s 29 islands.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking in Ruhija Sector & Transfer to Buhoma Sector

Today you will trek your third gorilla group, this time in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi. Start early with breakfast, then drive to the park offices for a briefing before entering the forest.

After the trek, continue to Buhoma sector, another part of Bwindi, and check in at your lodge.

Day 5: Buhoma Gorilla Trekking

Today you will trek your fourth and final gorilla family, this time in Buhoma, the oldest gorilla trekking area in Bwindi. After the trek, return to the lodge to rest and reflect on your experience.

Day 6: Fly to Entebbe

After breakfast, your driver will take you to Kihihi Airstrip for your domestic flight back to Entebbe International Airport.
